Amelie Mauresmo ousted from French Open
No. 5 seed Amelie Mauresmo was ousted from the French Open draw by No. 25 seed Czech Lucie Safarova 6-3, 7-6(3). French fans will need to wait another year in the hope of a home country champion.
Mauresmo’s claycourt preparation was cut short by an emergency appendectomy. Mauresmo admitted she had been struggling for weeks and didn’t know what to expect in the French Open 2007.
Although Mauresmo has been one of the top players for several years she was criticized for mental strength after succumbing to nerves in Grand Slam finals prior to 2006. Mauresmo reached top ranking without having won a Grand Slam. When she won the 2006 Australian Open she ensured that no women’s singles World No. 1 player has never one a Grand Slam.
