Tennis professionals offer tips on how to stay healthy

Daniela Hantuchova Too much tennis can mean injuries and a compromised immunity - check some training tips from the pros.

Like other professional sports people the level of training for professional tennis players is immense - but even amateur players who practice and play to much can be prone to injury.

“Tennis is a wonderful way to get fit and meet new people,” said Karl Hale, a tennis coach and the tournament director for the Rogers Cup taking place in Toronto.

“But people don’t realize that playing too much, or with the wrong technique, can cause injuries.”

Recently a study showed amongst other things too much practice can cause spinal injury in younger players.

On the importance of recovery Nadia Petrova says:

“We get injured all the time, because we push our bodies too far,” said the Russian tennis star. “I think in many sports it’s like that where people just take their bodies for granted.”

“There are some days when we have just finished a three-to four-hour match, you are really sore and the last thing you really want to do is go out on the court again.”

“That’s when you have to know what to eat, remember to stay hydrated and sleep - that is really the best way to recover.”

Meanwhile Arthur De Vany says that professional Tennis Players have to many low grade carbs.  Too many carbs in the form of sugary drinks and grain foods like pasta lead to insulin resistance and inflammation - which means longer recover times.

De Vany also says this is why a lot of tennis players have higher body fat percentages than other professional athletes - particularly for a primarily anaerobic based activity.
