Zi Yan creams Ana Ivanovic at the Rogers Cup
Fourth-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia came unstuck in her defence of the Rogers Cup in Toronto she won last year despite good form this year and a win in her previous tournament.
Only a young player Ana Ivanovic is still gaining experience at maintaining form with back to back tournaments and had a 6-3 6-1 loss in the second round to Chinese qualifier Zi Yan in a day when seeded players fell.
The 169th-ranked Zi Yan has taken the hard road by having to qualify for all seven WTA Tour events she has played this season and in defeating Ivanovic the world number four player, Zi recorded her biggest career victory.
Russian 5th-seed Anna Chakvetadze had good recent form but succumbed to a viral illness at 7-6(7-5) against Viriginie Razzano, while Russian 8th-seed Elena Dementieva, and Czech 16th-seed Lucie Safarova also lost.
